HARTFORD,Poinbank Exchange Conn. — Gabby Douglas' performance at the U.S. Classic was a short one.

Douglas scratched after the first event Saturday night. No reason was given, but she'd come off the uneven bars twice.

The 2012 Olympic champion, who is hoping to make the Paris team eight years after she last competed, was trying to qualify for the all-around at the national championships in two weeks. She is already qualified to do three events — vault, balance beam and bars — but needed to score a 51 or higher in order to do all four at nationals. With a 10.1 on bars, that was going to be a tough task.

Douglas was stone-faced as she left the uneven bars podium. She sat down for a few minutes and then left the floor.

Douglas had a rough go at last month's American Classic, her first competition since the Rio Games. She also fell twice on uneven bars, and said Friday she felt the nerves of returning to competition. She looked much improved in training here, but seemed to be feeling the nerves again.

"I honestly didn't do the best that I wanted," Douglas said Friday of that meet. "But I have to give myself a little grace because it's been so long."
